Seasonic touts the S12D-850 as a power supply that should be used in conjunction with power-hungry multi-core processors and dual-GPU videocards, and given this PSU's 850W capacity, PCSTATS is inclined to agree.

Amongst enthusiasts, Seasonic is considered one of the best PSU manufacturers in the business. A part of this excellent reputation is earned because Seasonic manufactures its own power suppliers, unlike other brands which simply slap stickers on generic units. Seasonic backs up all of its power supplies with a 5-year warranty.

Of course there's more to the S12D 850 than just the amount of juice it can produce. This power supply is 80 Plus Silver efficiency certified, which guarantees that it operates at above 85% efficiency across 20%, 50% and 100% loading. The 80 Plus Silver rating also means the S12D 850 is Energy Star 5.0 ready, so it should do its part to cut down on your electricity bill.

The Seasonic S12D-850 is of course loaded with all the cables necessary to hook it up to your PC. This unit has four PCI Express power connectors, two of which are six-pin while the other two are convertible (6 +2) pin cables, which have become a more common requirement for certain high-end videocards. There are also six molex connectors (4-pin), and nine SATA connectors for hard drives and new optical drives. Rounding out the package are a pair of 8-pin 12V CPU cables, a floppy connector, and a main power cable (24/20 pin convertible).

Seasonic's S12D 850 power supply is compatible with ATX 2.2 spec standard and supports the 24 pin ATX power connector by default. Seasonic rates the the +3.3V and +5V rails for 24 Amps and 30 Amps respectively, for a total combined output of 150W. There are two +12V lines, each can output 70 Amps for a combined output of 840W.

Includes:

Manual, screws, power cord, molex to floppy power adapter

This 850W power supply is rated up to 99% Active Power Factor Correction to improve efficiency, reduce heat and conserve power. A-PFC circuitry works with a wider voltage range (115VAC of North America to 230VAC of Europe), which is good since the S12D 850 has Universal AC support (120/240VAC).

The unit measures: 150 x 140 x 86mm, so it will fit into any desktop PC case. At the bottom of the power supply there is a single 120mm fan which draws in warm air from within the computer, expelling it out the rear via a honeycomb vent.

In typical Seasonic fashion, the 120mm fan is temperature controlled and during typical operating conditions it can operate in near silence, only spinning up if the ambient temperature rises significantly.

Altogether the Seasonic S12D 850 will cost you around $180 CDN ($160 USD, £100 GBP), which actually makes it quite a good bargain for a PSU of this capacity. It's time to take a quick look at the Seasonic S12D 850 power supply from a couple different and take a quick peek inside...
