With high DPI screens getting more common in laptops, setting the Windows desktop to 125%, 150% or even 200% scaling is becoming mandatory for a lot of machines. Question remains: is Windows ready for this “HiDPI” trend? We looked into it and as it turns out: it’s not. To see how Windows scales on high resolution displays, we've performed an extensive test with 18 commonly used applications on the Windows desktop. We used Windows 8.1, since Microsoft claims that the latest version of its Windows operating system is better suited for these types of displays. For all software, we used the most recent versions that were available at the time of writing. Older versions will undoubtedly perform even worse. Out of 18 apps tested, 8 were totally unusable at 200% scaling. Only 3 out of 18 were visually pleasing at 200%.
