About one year after the Core i7 980X was the first hexa-core Intel processor for the desktop market, the Core i7 990X now replaces it as the top end model. Still based on the “Westmere” platform with X58 chupset and socket 1366, it is challenged by Intel’s own “Sandy Bridge” platform.
