Evergreen Adds Higher Capacity External HotDrives, & `Lite' Versions
of Interface Cards, to IEEE 1394 fireLINE Family
FireLINE HotDrives Provide High Speed Portable Data Storage For PC
and Mac Users; Lite Versions of fireLINE Interface Cards Offer Basic
FireWire Peripheral Connectivity On a Budget
CORVALLIS, Ore.--Aug. 28, 2000--Evergreen Technologies, Inc., a
leader in PC performance upgrades since 1989, today added five new
products to its fireLINE(TM) product family. (Evergreen's fireLINE
products are developed using the new IEEE 1394 (or FireWire(TM))
high-speed data communication standard.) Evergreen has been shipping
its 20 GB external HotDrive since February 2000, and now the company
also offers higher capacity 75, 60, 40 and 30 GB HotDrives.
Evergreen's fireLINE HotDrives vastly increase data storage space and
data transmission speed between the external drive and the PC, and the
user can simply plug the drive into any available IEEE 1394 port
without ever having to turn off the host system's power.
Evergreen has also added `lite' versions of its IEEE 1394 fireLINE
interface cards to provide basic IEEE 1394 peripheral connectivity on
a budget for users with existing desktop and portable PCs and Macs
which do not have an IEEE 1394 connection. The lite versions of the
fireLINE PCI card (for desktops), fireLINE CardBus/PCMCIA card (for
portables) and fireLINE IEEE 1394/USB PCI Combo Card (providing
desktops with both FireWire and USB connectivity) will be a smart
choice for customers who do not need a FireWire cable or who do not
need the Ulead Video Studio digital video editing software provided
with the regular versions.
Pricing for Evergreen's fireLINE Family Members:
Evergreen sells its fireLINE products directly from
www.evergreennow.com. Presently, the fireLINE HotDrives go for $799.99
(75 GB), $499.99 (60 GB), $399.99 (40 GB), and $349.99 (30 GB).
Evergreen's fireLINE CDRW drive sells for $349.99, and Mac users will
need a separate Evergreen Mac Accessory Kit which sells for $49.99.
Switching to the connector cards, the fireLINE PCI card sells for
$59.99, while its lite version sells for $49.99. The fireLINE
CardBus/PCMCIA card sells for $84.99, while its lite version sells for
$69.99. Lastly, the fireLINE IEEE 1394/USB PCI ComboCard sells for
$99.99, while its lite version sells for $89.99.
The fireLINE PCMCIA interface card does not provide power to
external devices, so laptop customers will need to purchase a separate
US Power Adapter ($19.95), if they don't already have one, in order to
connect and run any IEEE 1394 peripherals. This would include
Evergreen's fireLINE HotDrives or fireLINE CDRW drive. Also, due to
the iMac's small power supply, users purchasing the fireLINE HotDrive
who do not have a separate US Power Adapter will need to purchase one.
Specifications for Evergreen's fireLINE Family Members:
All Evergreen's fireLINE products are designed for use in both a
PC or Mac environment, and all come with an illustrated installation
guide and a one-year warranty. Built-in operating system support for
IEEE 1394 peripherals is provided in Windows 98 Second Edition,
Windows 2000, the upcoming Windows Millennium, and Mac OS 8.6 or
higher for iMacDV as well as PowerMacs with existing 1394 ports.
Support is not built into Windows 98 or Windows NT. "Plug-n-play" and
"hot swapping" (features of IEEE 1394 technology) enable all Evergreen
fireLINE peripherals (HotDrives & CDRW drive) to connect with up to 63
different IEEE 1394 devices simultaneously.
Interface cards: Evergreen's fireLINE PCI card enables users to
connect desktops (which don't have the IEEE 1394 port) to IEEE 1394
peripherals, while Evergreen's fireLINE CardBus/PCMCIA card does the
same for portables. Evergreen's IEEE 1394/USB PCI ComboCard gives
desktops the ability to connect to peripherals using either the 1394
or the USB interface. All regular versions of these cards ship with
one 1394 6-to-6 pin digital cable, one 6-to-4 pin video adapter cable
and Ulead Video Studio SE on CD which allows customers to edit digital
video images, adding titles, sound effects, voice overs and music. The
PCI card and PCI ComboCard are both equipped with three external and
one internal IEEE 1394 connectors, while the PCI ComboCard also comes
equipped with two external USB ports. Both require a standard
available 32-Bit PCI slot for installation. The CardBus/PCMCIA card
has two external IEEE 1394 connectors, and requires a CardBus
compliant, 32-Bit, type 2 PCMCIA slot for installation. New `lite'
versions of each card ship without the 6-to-6 and 6-to-4 pin FireWire
cables and without the Ulead video editing software. This is a good
choice for customers who either already have a video editing package,
or who aren't using their IEEE 1394 connection for the purpose of
connecting DV cameras to their PCs to edit videos.
HotDrives: Compact in size (2.35 lbs, L 8.75", W 5.5", H 1.5"),
the fireLINE external HotDrives (75, 60, 40, 30 and 20 GB) are ideal
for backing up and transferring dense amounts of data between systems
very quickly. The HotDrives are also an excellent vehicle to transport
large files between the PC and Mac environments. They come with one
external DC +12V input power jack for additional daisy chained
devices, and drive management software.
CDRW drive: The fireLINE CDRW drive is portable, external, compact
(L 10", W 6", H 2"), offers a 6x burn speed (6x4x32), and comes with a
6-to-6 pin IEEE 1394 interface cable. It allows users to produce their
own multimedia CDs in minutes, using the drive's write, read, erase
and rewrite capabilities. To facilitate CD production, Evergreen
includes Adaptec's popular EZ CD Creator software, and one piece of
blank CDR and one piece of blank CDRW media. Additionally, Mac users
will need to purchase Evergreen's Mac Accessory kit that provides
Charismac Discribe 3.06 software, necessary Mac drivers and a power
supply. For both PC and Mac users, installation of the drive requires
an available industry standard IEEE 1394 connection.
