The Recording Industry Association of America filed suit today against MP3.com Inc., alleging that the site's new Instant Listening and Beam-It services violate its members' copyrights. The services allow consumers to play music from an online library of music provided that they have previously proven that they own the desired compact disc. The RIAA claims that the services are built on an unauthorized digital archive of music that is not owned by MP3.com, and that they company constructed the database without making the slightest attempt to obtain permission from the copyright owners to do so.
