Before FPS (First Person Shooter) games such as Quake III Arena and Counter-Strike became popular, many users did not care about the type of mousepad they used, nor what it looked like. In today's FPS games, however, precision, accuracy and rapid movements are very important. You have to be able to easily slide the mouse across the mousing surface without any hinderance so you can aim where you want to, when you want to.
