The C-Media 8738 onboard audio chip is an improvement over AC97 and gives you the ability of 5.1 sound. The only concern is that the center channel/sub woofer connection has to come from a port on the motherboard and the connector itself takes up a PCI opening. The onboard audio hasn't got the bells and whistles as some others do but it is more than adequate for the average user.
