Hmm.... the boys at Hardware Accelerated have a rant up about the State of
the Graphics Industry... It's a pretty good read
for everyone.
The graphics industry has gone through some drastic changes in landscape
over the last few months. The industry if anything is very fickle, having a
new boy wonder every so often. Since my last state of graphics article, much
has changed, including new competitors entering the fray. Today, ATI, VIA, SIS,
NVIDIA, ATI, 3D Labs, Matrox, and even Trident are all looking for a piece of
the pie and much like the competitive seen of the market a few years ago the
industry will once again consolidate to some point. The low-end market is going
to see new entries from ATI, SIS, and Trident all fighting for a piece of the
low-end, low margins, high volume market. All of these cards contain DX8 features
and performance, with a few containing a few features above the DX 8.1 spec.
Unlike a year ago, low-end boards are twinkling down to the low-end market at
a faster pace than that of past generation boards have.
