I also think that with the high RPM used for writing CLV at 20X, this drive could have definitely be rated with a 48X reading speed, but maybe Plextor decided the small gain in performance isn't worth the extra noise. Never the less, PX-W4012A is in my opinion the best 40X writer available, even though TEAC and LITE-ON offer a 40/12/48 drive. There is version of PX-W4012A with all black front panel, called the Special Edition.
