After the SiS735, SiS had come back onto the chipset scene among hardware enthusiasts. The SiS735 was actually not very innovatice in terms of offering more features than the competition, it was simply a solid Socket A chipset with support for DDR266 (PC2100). However, the SiS645 turned some heads when SiS revealed that the chipset would support DDR333 ofering 2.7 GB/s of memory bandwidth compared to 2.1 GB/s for PC2100/DDR266.
With DDR333, the chipset performed well compared to VIA's P4X266 series, which only supported DDR266. Its good performance combined with a low price as well as a full license from Intel for Pentium 4 chipsets made the SiS645 an attractive choice for OEMs and motherboard manufacturers. Its support for DDR333 made it an attractive choice for hardware enthusiasts aiming to squeeze out the most performance out of their hardware.
