"And while CD readers are slowly retreating, DVD readers are again not getting their real chance. If you would have to find the pieces of hardware with the most bad luck in the PC world, DVD readers would be in one of the first three spots. It was logical to expect that CD readers would be replaced by DVD readers. However, the “life expectancy” of CD readers has been increased way beyond the point anyone expected. To make matters worse, instead of DVD readers finally occupying their predestined places, those places were taken by CD-RW writers, and they are still not leaving. With the luck of DVD players, as soon as the CD-RW story ends, their places will be taken over by DVD±RW writers. However, luck is not the only factor. The speed spec of DVD players has been “stuck” at 16x for quite a long time, without much hope that it will move away from that enchanted number."
