"Not so many years ago high quality mouse pads were trickling their way into the market with mixed success. At about the same time the evolution from ball mice to optical mice was all the rage and mousepads were put on the back burner. Some companies still tried, but people who could now put their optical mice right on the desk and have them work didn't understand why they should spend another $20 or $25 on a mousepad."
