Further affirming the manufacturer's position as the leading Pocket PC manufacturer, Hewlett-Packard has launched two new models in its high-end series of iPAQ handhelds. The 5100 is the first model in the 5000 series to not feature integrated 802.11b, whilst the 5500 lays claim to the title of 'most powerful Pocket PC' - yet they share a number of their specifications. Both powered by a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor, the new handhelds run the latest version of Microsoft's Pocket PC platform - now branded Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. But where the 5500 sports 128 MB of RAM and up to 17 MB of iPAQ File Store, the 5100 "only" offers 64 MB of RAM and up to 4 MB of iPAQ File Store. They do, however, share the same 3.8", 16-bit transflective TFT display.
Another feature shares by both models is integrated Bluetooth, but unlike the 5500, the 5100 does not offer built-in 802.11b connectivity, and has also lost the characteristic "knob" antenna introduced with the iPAQ h5450 model. Also gone from the 5100 model is the biometric fingerprint reader, but as the 5500 is a replacement top model for the h5450, it is very much still present there.
