NetBIOS stands for Network Basic Input Output System. It was originally developed by IBM and Sytek as an Application Programming Interface (API) for client software to access LAN resources. If you have experience working on a LAN using Microsoft Windows Operating Systems you must have clicked on "Network Neighborhood" to access the computers attached to your network. After clicking on the icon you would have seen the names of the computers on the network.
