Frosty has a rather cool tech-bit on some "z-axis" heatpipe heatsinks..."Thermshield have an interesting "Z-Axis" heatsink, shown here, which consists of about about 15 medium diameter copper heatpipes sunk into the base of the heatsink upright. The heatpipes make direct contact with the CPU directly below, and are more efficient at moving the heat up and "out" to the tips of fins."
