What this really says is that the price of Centrino based Pentium M notebooks will be falling rather shortly. So, don't buy one now. Hold off a few weeks until we get a clear picture on what impact the "Sonoma" chipset will have performance-wise. 80 models are being released, with 2.13GHz 'Dothan' chips under the hood.
"Intel plans to launch the second generation of its Centrino mobile processor platform at a January 19 event in San Francisco, the Santa Clara, California, company confirmed today. The new platform, code-named Sonoma, will include a new version of Intel's Pentium M mobile processor, a new wireless chip, and a new chip set, which Intel says will have double the graphics performance of its current products. The most interesting developments in Sonoma, however, relate to the platform's new "Alviso" chip set and its 533MHz frontside bus architecture."
On the other side of the fence, the green side, AMD has its brand new 64-bit mobile AMD Turion 64 processor. Notebooks based on Turion 64 processors are expected to begin shipping from OEMs in the first half of 2005.
