Q: I'm interested in
purchasing some sort of PDA, preferably one with a keyboard, to help me with my
job and let me write emails and notes on the road. I know that all the
current Pocket PC machines come with versions of word and excel (both of which I
would need), but few of them have decent keyboards. I can also get my hands
on older used PDA's with a clamshell format and a keyboard. These use an
older version of the Microsoft Pocket OS though. My question is, what's
the difference between the old pocket office apps and the new
ones?
A: While I've never used pre-Windows Mobile versions of
Microsoft's Pocket OS, I can tell you that using a stylus to create or edit
word documents is a miserable experience. It's great for notes, but lousy
for full documents. In my experience, carrying documents between pocket
and full office Word is fairly painless, but actually working on them is
tough. Using a PDA with a full keyboard would definitely be easier, but
the most recent versions of Pocket Word are crippled compared to their desktop
counterparts, so I'd imagine that pre-Windows Mobile versions would be even more
so.
