BELL CANADA CELEBRATES 125TH ANNIVERSARY TODAY

Montreal, Quebec, April 29 2005Bell Canada, the national leader in communications since 1880, celebrates its 125th anniversary today. Bell will mark this historic milestone year with a program of events and activities that thank employees for their dedication, celebrate the company’s long history, and set the stage for the future.

Bell has connected Canadian society and business for 125 years,” said Jim Little, Senior Vice President, Corporate Marketing, Bell Canada. “Thousands of employees, and millions of customers, have been part of the Bell story. As we transform our business to best serve customers with the most advanced technology, it is important to reflect on how far Bell has come and where the organization is headed.”

Bell Canada Historical ‘Firsts’

April 29, 1880 – The Bell Telephone Company is incorporated by Federal charter.

1881 – Bell installs the first public telephone in Lancefield’s Stationary Store, Hamilton, Ontario . The telephone is not equipped with acoin collector and customers pay the shopkeeper.

1916 – Montreal is connected with Vancouver for the first time.

1943 – First outdoor telephone booth put in service.

1985 – Bell Cellular offers cellular mobile telephone service.

1995 – Launch of Sympatico Internet service.

1997 – Launch of Bell ExpressVu service.

2001 – Bell Mobility officially opens for business in Western Canada.

2003 – Bell Enters the Internet Protocol (IP) World.
