"Gigabyte Technology and Asustek announced on March 22 that they would indefinitely suspend cooperation in their joint venture Gigabyte United.
Gigabyte announced that Gigabyte United (GU), which has been in operation for only two months, saw NT$2.17 billion (US$66 million) in revenues for February with year to date revenues of NT$3.93 billion. Motherboard shipments for both Gigabyte and GU together amounted to 1.10 million units in February, the same as January, while graphic card shipments reached 310,000 units, a 24% growth on month.
Tony Liao, Gigabyte's spokesman, stated that since Gigabyte United started operating, many channel clients, suppliers and employees were worried about the independence of the Gigabyte brand. Gigabyte decided it was in the company's best long-term interest to keep its motherboard brand independent and maintain variety in the market by suspending the joint venture with Asustek."
