This morning PC Perspective has published an article by a very special guest
writer. Daniel Pohl has created new rendering engines for both Quake 3 and
Quake 4 that use ray tracing as the method of drawing instead of the
standard rasterization used in all games today. The Q3 and Q4 engines don't
run incredibly fast, but the results show a myriad of benefits including
being able to take advantage of more and more processing cores
simultaneously. The Intel quad-core QX6700 is able to render a scene at a
resolution of 256x256 at 16.9 FPS; something that wasn't possible until
recently. This is a must see article that discusses Daniel's ray tracing
work as well as examples of the engines in action.
