To help introduce the new Blu-Ray disc format (it's set to replace
standard DVDs), Warner and Sony are teaming up for a Canadian mall tour
to demonstrate Blu-ray DVD picture and sound quality first hand. They've left the flow
charts and dull statistics at home though, and instead will be showcasing
the differences between standard definition DVD movies and high
definition Blu-ray content, with the new Batman flick - Dark
Knight.
The mall tour will be stopping off in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and
Montréal from November 20th to December 21st, so if you're lucky you'll catch an
eyeful of HD Blu-Ray Dark Knight magic before the movie is officially even
released.
Why are we mentioning this? Well, with the right HDMI-enabled motherboard
(I'd suggest this, this or that) and an inexpensive Blu-Ray DVD drive like the ASUS
BC-1205PT burner, you can build a Home Theatre PC for a lot less than stand
alone Blu-Ray player + stereo system costs. Actually, with just the ASUS
BC-1205PT burner and a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor you can retrofit an existing PC
system's videocard DVI output to an HDMI signal (or component output if the VGA supports it),
though the audio stream might be a little tricky as only recent Radeon graphics
cards are capable of combining both... anyway, stay tuned for PCSTATS full
review of the $150-buck ASUS
BC-1205PT Blu-Ray burner.
