The Large Hadron Collider was successfully turned on today at the CERN facilities on the French/Swiss border and two beams of particles were fired around the full 27km circumference of the experiment. The $10bn machine is arguably the most complex and largest scientific experiment in particle physics every produced, for what is probably the most simple and basic of questions- what is mass?
Today's test won't reveal any scientific insight, but in the coming months the two beams of particles will eventually be smashed together, at 99.99% the speed of light in absolute vacuum at near absolute zero, and analyzed by four detectors; LCHb, ALICE, CMS and ATLAS.
This infamous video produced by CERN's Kate McAlpine explains the science behind the LHC in a fun way, so resist the urge to fall down laughing and watch it through once and you'll get the gist of how the experiment works.
(1.9million views and counting for a physics rap - now that's impressive ;-)
