Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are expected to hold a joint press conference on Monday in the US to make a "strategic announcement."Some industry sources have speculated that the announcement is likely to be about graphics process unit (GPU) business, as TSMC has strong and stable process technology for GPU manufacturing, judging from its experience cooperating with AMD and Nvidia. The sources believe that Intel will outsource its GPUs or chipsets to TSMC in order to save costs and diversify risks.
But some other observers believe the outsourcing will be for Intel's next-generation CPU codenamed Clarkdale, which features an integrated GPU. Intel may outsource the GPU manufacturing to TSMC and then package the GPU and CPU together, the observers said.
