Life is always about compromises, and digital entertainment as part of the digital lifestyle are part of that. And right now, any of the RADEON 5850 are probably the best compromise ever. But I digress, the 5850 is only a compromise in comparison to the 5870, which costs more, draws more power and has a tad more performance. In any other consideration, the 5850 is very serious and in most cases, it will be possible to up the performance yet another few notches by utilizing the overclocking potential. Keep in mind that overclocking is, in fact, a built-in feature since at least the GPU appears to be artificially down-clocked to justify the price overhead of the 5870 (“non Pro” Cypress). It wasn’t to much of a surprise to see the ASUS EAH5850 win essentially every benchmark as far as single GPU competition was concerned but at the same time, the true potential of that card only came out when overclocked to 850 MHz Engine and 4400 Mbps memory data rate. Here is where ASUS voltage tweak and Smart Doctor can really help or at least provide some ease of mind since the core temperatures remained – I hate to use that word again - ridiculously low.
