On Monday Be Inc. announced that it had signed a licensing deal with PC maker Compaq Computer Corp. to incorporate a BeOS-based information appliance platform. The PC giant will include the core components of the BeOS as well as the Opera browser, which provides the ability to play video and audio streams, and several application development services.
The focus on Internet appliances is a major departure for the company, which had bred itself to be an alternative to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows for media-rich applications, like graphics design and audio/video processing.
