Compaq Computer Corp. and Inacom Corp. are close to striking a deal that would dramatically shake up distribution channels. A source familiar with the situation says Inacom officials will meet Monday to consider a purchase offer from Compaq, adding that a deal is imminent.
Compaq's move is an apparent bid to bolster the company's direct sales effort, while cutting off such rivals as Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp., both of which sell through Inacom. Inacom is a $7 billion corporate reseller and distributor, which is moving into the information technology services field.
Either Compaq or Inacom have however confirmed this rumor.
