Samsung SW224 24-10-40 CDRW Burner

The numbers 24-10-40 are used to indicate that the Samsung SW224 CD-R/RW (or CDRW for short) burner is capable of writing CD-R media at 24X, rewriting CD-RW media at 10X, and reading standard CD-ROM's at 40X.

Having three types of drives is really not that practical anymore as it takes away too many IDE channels. This is why CDRW burners have become the de facto standard on most computers sold today. The slight trade off in speed you get from a three-in-one is still well worth it in the longrun.

The SW224 uses 2MB of buffer and has 512KB of flash memory so the firmware could be updated in the future if necessary. The drive uses a more long lasting geared motorized tray mechanism (as opposed to rubber belt) and can be mounted horizontally or vertically depending on your preferences (ie. as in a 4U server). Both the full sized 120mm CD's and smaller half-size 80mm CD's can be read. The front bezel is clean with just an eject button, indication LED, headphone jack and volume wheel for audio disk playback.

Samsung SW224 CDRW

Ships with the following:
  • User's Guide
  • Easy CD Creator 5
  • CD Audio cable (4-pin connector)
  • Philips mounting screws
  • 40-pin IDE CABLE
  • 2X Recording Media

Manufacturer: www.samsung.ca

On the rear of the drive, Samsung have been very good with connectors and included, along with the standard IDE/Molex Power/Analog Audio Connect a two-pin digital audio output terminal. However, only the four-pin analog audio cable is included with the drive. This cable needs to be plugged into the motherboard or sound card if you want to listen to CD's through the computer.

The Samsung SW224 comes with that four-pin audio cable, a 40-pin IDE cable, sound mounting screws, manual, some blank media (one CDR and CDRW disk), and a proprietory version of Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5 which supports PureBurn. The burner itself uses something called "Super Link" which is basically the same idea as "Just Link" or "BurnProof" which protect against buffer underrun errors from making a coaster out of your recording media.

We made sure that the drive was set to DMA to get the best possible results from it. If you are unsure of how to set your drive to DMA a short explanation is included in the instructions. The first benchmark we used to test the read capabilities of the SW-224 was E-Testinglabs CDWinbench.

CDWinBench Source: e-Testinglabs.com

The e-TestingLabs CD Winbench99 benchmark runs a series of scripted programs from a special CD in the drive and measures the time and data transfer capabilities as a result. Higher numbers mean better performance.

CD-WinBench 99 Benchmark Results
Test Drive Results
1. Samsung SW-224 (CD-RW) 1320 kb/s
2. Samsung SC-152 (CDROM) 1710 kb/s
3. Pioneer DVD-500M (DVD ROM) 2440 kb/s
4. Samsung SW-216 (CD-RW) 1280 kb/s

The SW-224 pulls out middle of the road performance in the CDWinbench benchmarks, but that is to be expected as it is just a 40X CDROM in that regards.
