Dual layer media can be found in Canada if you search really hard, and here the MSI DRI6-B performs as expected. The test took 44 minutes 32 seconds to complete! It takes a long time to burn 8.5GB of data at 2.4x speed...

A good package

When it comes to computers, one general rule is that you can never have enough storage space. That's why technologies like dual-layer DVDs have entered into the mix, and will continue to evolve in the future.

Dual-layer DVD discs and burners are the next evolutionary step in the recordable media world. Now we can store an amazing 8.5GB of data on one disc, thanks to dual-layer recordable media which stores data on two planes instead of the normal one. Back up an entire system on one disk, and entire DVD movie, or a full MP3 collection!

The MSI DR16-B Dual Layer optical drive we reviewed today is one of the most advanced burners out there; it is able to write to conventional DVD+\-R media at 16x, dual layer media at 2.4x, rewritable DVDs at 4x and reading at a quick 16x. With regular CDs, the drive can write at 40x for CD-R and 24x for CD-RW and read at 40x.

Since this drive is just now hitting the retail markets, we can't wrangle a firm MSRP on it, but expect it to be priced competitively against the dual layer DVD burners which are on store shelves right now in the region of $199 CDN.

The performance of the MSI DR16-B was excellent. Its CPU utilization was a bit higher than normal but nothing out of the ordinary for a DVD unit. Those of you who like your PCs to be as quiet as possible will be happy with the DR16-B. It's a bit loud when it initially spins up, but that only lasts a few seconds. After that it's dead quiet even when reading DVD's at full speed, and it does not get hot either. It's nice to see MSI include the well-known and liked Nero Burning ROM program instead of some random CD burning application. So if you want to modernize your system, the MSI DR16-B is a great place to start!
