Unreal Tournament 2004

Source: Epic

Unreal Tournament 2004 is the sequel to the highly popular UT2003 and uses the very latest Unreal Engine technology. Unreal Tournament 2004 employs the use of Vertex and Pixel Shaders and it's recommended that you use a DirectX 9 videocard if you plan to play competitively.

UT2004 can tell the difference between the motherboards and here the Albatron K8X890 Pro II does very well for itself!

Doom 3

Source: id Software

Doom 3 is the most advanced game to date. it takes advantage of the latest videocard technology and pushes the processing power of the CPU to its absolute limit. At its highest setting, Ultra quality, texture sizes pass the 500MB mark which means even tomorrow's videocards will have a hard time running everything. The frame rates in the game itself are locked at 60 fps so anything above that point is wasted. Each test is run three times with the third run being recorded.

In our last benchmark, Doom 3, the Albatron K8X890 Pro II has another good showing. If you're into gaming the Albatron K8X890 Pro II can deliver!

K8T890 Shows its Stuff

The Albatron K8X890 Pro II motherboard doesn't have a ton of features but it does come with the most important feature of the moment, support for PCI Express x16 videocards. There are also plenty of other things most users would need, like a Gigabit NIC, 7.1 audio courtesy of the VIA Envy 24PT chip and IEEE 1394. If you need more, there are three PCI slots and one PCI Express x4 slot for expansion purposes.

Generally, the motherboard was easy to use with a good layout, although we were not pleased to see that Albatron placed the floppy drive connector at the bottom of the board yet again.

Configuring the included mPower VRM module was more difficult than it should be, and hearing warnings of potential "Motherboard or VRM damage" never goes down well. VIA also needs to get its act together and release the VT8251 Southbridge which is technically way more advanced than the aging VT8237R Southbridge the K8X890 Pro II uses.

We were very pleased with the Albatron K8X890 Pro II when it came to performance. It was near the top of its class in every test and was especially impressive on the more demanding 3D applications. It looks like the K8T890 might just be a great gaming chipset, and the Albatron K8X890 Pro II is certainly an excellent motherboard for the hardcore gamer. If you're looking for a new PCI Express equipped AMD Athlon64 motherboard, the Albatron K8X890 Pro II can deliver the goods, so watch for it in stores.
