Motherboard Benchmarks: Quake 4 / Conclusions

ID Software Quake 4 1.3

Source: id Software

Quake 4 is the latest shooter from ID and is based on the Doom 3 engine. Tweaked to for more eye candy, Quake 4 promises to be tougher on videocards and systems than its predecessor was. Quake 4 also does not have a 60 fps limiter like Doom 3, with the Ultra setting, graphic textures can surpass the 500MB mark! Each test is run three times and with the third run being recorded.

Quake 4 puts the Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 in a good light. If you're a gamer you're going to be happy with the performance of this motherboard. The Core 2 Duo E6600 processor when combined with fast memory is a force to be reckoned with!

Silent and Deadly? Gigabyte's Latest P965 Express Mobo

The Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 is a balanced motherboard that is capable of completing any task that you ask of it. Even though the motherboard has loads of integrated features like IEEE 1394a, plenty of Serial ATA II ports, Gigabit networking and 7.1 channel High Definition audio, you still have plenty of expansion opportunities. Three PCI Express x1 and two PCI slots certainly give the GA-965P-DQ6 a lot of options.

The motherboard is a breeze to work on, and it feels like Gigabyte designed the GA-965P-DQ6 with the end user in mind. The location of all headers, slots and ports is just as it should be. The quality of the manual and installation guide that Gigabyte includes is also top notch. Fear not if you're a newbie, the set up is a breeze.

Gigabyte equips the GA-965P-DQ6 with solid-state capacitors instead of the traditional electrolytic capacitors. That should improve stability of power to the various devices in your computer as well as increase the boards' life expectancy. Performance of the Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 was good, it performed in the same range as all other Intel 975X and P965 Express motherboards PCSTATS compared it against. The consistency between the various Intel chipsets is really that tight.

The Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 was good at overclocking, an in the PCSTATS lab we reached a top speed of 406 MHz on it. We're particularly impressed with the voltage options that are available in the BIOS. Kudos to that. If you're an inexperienced overclocker, just make sure you don't just set the voltages to the maximum.

With a retail price of $235 CDN ($201 US, £102 GBP), the Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 is a bit more expensive than the average Intel P965 Express based platform but it comes with a lot of goodies. If you're looking to upgrade to Core 2 Duo, this is an excellent platform which should last for years to come.
