Motherboard Benchmarks: Quake 4 / Conclusions

ID Software Quake 4 1.3

Source: id Software

Quake 4 is the latest shooter from ID and is based on the Doom 3 engine. Tweaked to for more eye candy, Quake 4 promises to be tougher on videocards and systems than its predecessor was. Quake 4 also does not have a 60 fps limiter like Doom 3, with the Ultra setting, graphic textures can surpass the 500MB mark! Each test is run three times and with the third run being recorded.

Quake 4 framerates with the onboard videocard are acceptable at these low settings, but you'll probably want to install a real videocard to play games.

AMD Vs. nVIDIA on the Chipset front

When AMD scooped up ATi, it not just got a graphics company it also picked up a well developing chipset team. That is significant because it gives AMD more control over its own destiny in the coming years.

On paper the AMD 690G certainly gives nVIDIA's GeForce 6100 series a good run for its money. Not only does the 690G promise more 3D performance, it also supports a host of features like HDMI output and HDCP DRM by default! None of the GeForce 6150 based motherboards on the market support those two features yet, and it looks like AMD has quite a winner on its hands here, especially in the digital multimedia home sector.

Please note that while PCSTATS did run both synthetic and actual gaming benchmarks on the Biostar TA690G AM2 motherboard, and HD system load tests, there is no specific benchmark for HDMI output specifically.

On the whole, this little motherboard comes with a lot of what you need to make a killer HTPC with the least possible investment. The Biostar TA690G AM2 has the all important HDMI output, the AMD 690G supports HDCP, and even an S-video TV-output is available. Talk about the multimedia options. The only caveat being that just one digital, and one analog option can be used and any time... so if you're hoping for concurrent DVI, Analog, HDMI, S-Video output you're not going to get that.

Other onboard goodies on the Biostar TA690G AM2 include four Serial ATA ports, a Gigabit network card, and a 7.1 channel High Definition audio. With a high level of integration it's quite surprising all this goes for $104 CDN ($91 USD, £46GBP)! We've also just received word that Newegg.com now have this board too.

Biostar's TA690G AM2 is a breeze to work with and you'll have this little motherboard setup and ready to go in no time. It's nice that AMD's 690G Northbridge and SB600 Southbridge generate very little heat so cooling the motherboard is not an issue. In the benchmarks PCSTATS saw that the Biostar TA690G AM2 performed well for its class with both integrated video and a stand alone Geforce 7800GTX. It's clear that the onboard Radeon Xpress 1250 videocard is faster than nVIDIA's GeForce 6150, though both are quite weak compared to stand along graphics solutions. Still, in ever 3D test we ran the AMD onboard videocard was faster.

AMD has put together a very competitive integrated chipset with its 690G and SB600 chipsets. Those looking for a no fuss multimedia system have a real alternative, every other integrated chipset out there requires a few extras here and there. The Biostar TA690G AM2 is a strong motherboard with a lot to offer. If you want to build a home entertainment machine or just want a low cost workstation computer, the TA690G AM2 should definitely be on your radar.
