MSI P35 Platinum Combo Intel P35 Express Motherboard Review

MSI P35 Platinum Combo Intel P35 Express Motherboard Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: With the Intel P35 Express chipset, users have two memory options; DDR2 and DDR3 RAM. The latter is certainly the future-proof option although it is still somewhat costly, while the former is firmly on the road to obsolescence.

MSI P35 Platinum Combo Motherboard Highlights

The two PCI Express x16 slots are spaced far apart so dual-slot-wide videocards can be used in tandem without interfering with one another.

The MSI P35 Platinum Combo motherboard features two PCI Express x16 slots (x16 and x4), two PCI Express x1 and two 32 bit PCI slots for legacy hardware. Notice the exclusive use of Low ESR solid aluminum capacitors.

The bottom right-hand corner of the MSI P35 Platinum Combo is well organized. Seen here are five Serial ATA II ports, the lone IDE connector, a CMOS clear button and three USB 2.0 headers (for six slots).

What makes the MSI P35 Platinum Combo special is that it supports both DDR2 and DDR3 memory (although not at the same time). Up to 8GB of DDR2-800 memory can be installed or 4GB of DDR3-1066 memory. To the right of the DIMM slots is the main 24 pin ATX power plug. The DDR2 and DDR3 slots are keyed differently, as you can see in the photo below.

There is plenty of space around the Intel LGA775 CPU socket for big after market Intel heatsinks, water blocks or whatever your heart desires. The P35 Express chipset is cooled with a passive heatpipe cooling system that connects the chipsets and MOSFETs together.
