Notebook Benchmark: Sandra 2009, PCMark Vantage

SiSoft Sandra 2009 Source: Sandra

Sandra is designed to test the theoretical power of a complete system and individual components. The numbers taken though are again, purely theoretical and may not represent real world performance. Higher numbers represent better performance.

Bare with us as we don't have a comparable notebook to pair the Samsung R480 against. The 2.26GHz Intel Core i5-430M processor inside the Samsung R480 laptop manages good results for mobile processor, but to put things in perspective these results in Sandra 2009 Processor are about 50-70% that of a desktop Core i5 750 CPU.

Memory performance is a bit more equal to that of a comparable desktop Core i5 based computer, although Memory Bandwidth is noticeably slower on notebooks.

Read Drive Index: MB/s Ranking
Samsung R480 62.9

Samsung R480 17.3

The 500GB 2.5" Seagate hard drive is limited by a comparatively slow spindle speed which limits the hard drive read test to a modest 62.9MB/s. A solid state 2.5" SATA hard drive could be installed to improve the situation, but would add considerably to the cost.

FutureMark PCMark Vantage Source: FutureMark

The latest version of the popular PCMark series, PCMark Vantage is an application-based benchmark and a premium tool for measuring overall PC performance. It uses portions of real applications instead of including whole applications or using specifically created code. This allows PCMark Vantage to maintain a smaller installation size while still giving accurate results.

The absence of a comparable notebook to pair the Samsung R480 against makes PCMark Vantage results a little difficult to digest. However, if we compare these results to a standard Intel Core i5 750 based desktop computer just for reference we'll see that the Samsung R480 handles productivity applications slower, but quite well on the whole.

PCSTATS encountered errors running Bapco Sysmark 2007 on the Samsung R480 so we are unable to include those results here. Next up, 3DMark benchmarks for the mobile nVidia Geforce GT 330M videocard and PCSTATS final thoughts on the Samsung R480 notebook.
