CPU Gaming Benchmarks: Crysis, FEAR

Crysis 1.2

Source: Electronic Arts

Crysis is a science fiction first-person shooter developed by Crytek. Crysis uses Microsoft's new API, DirectX 10 for graphics rendering, and includes the new engine—the CryEngine 2—that is the successor to Far Cry's CryEngine. CryEngine 2 is among the first engines to use the DirectX 10 framework of Windows Vista, but can also run using DirectX 9, both on Vista and Windows XP.

Higher results are better. Cyrsis is single-threaded.

Quad-core processors don't make for much of an advantage in Crysis. Dual-core processors offer the best bang-for-buck here. The AMD Athlon II X4 645 CPU isn't able to bust out from the other Athlon II processors tested. The result is that the Athlon II X4 645 CPU simply doesn't do all that well in gaming tests like this, you'll be better served with a faster videocard than anything else! The last benchmark of the day is up next.

Sierra FEAR 1.08

Source: Sierra

FEAR is Sierra's latest first person shooter which relies heavily on DirectX 9 features. With its "Soft Shadows" feature enabled, even the fastest videocards run at a crawl, FEAR is definitely the new benchmark for future FPS games to follow.

Higher results are better. FEAR is single-threaded.

Everything that was true about Crysis is doubly true for FEAR. The quad-core L3-less Athlon II X4 645 comes in near-last place, despite its 3.1GHz clock speed. It's just not a chip designed for gaming. Now that PCSTATS has wrapped up the last benchmark set, let's put everything into perspective for you and consider whether the $122 AMD Athlon II X4 645 processor is a good buy or not.
