Beginners Guide: Intel Smart Response Technology and Intel 311 Larson Creek SSD

Beginners Guide: Intel Smart Response Technology and Intel 311 Larson Creek SSD - PCSTATS
Abstract: With the launch of the Intel Z68 motherboard chipset, Intel also unveiled a novel addition to its Rapid Storage Technology v10.5 disk storage and RAID management tool called Smart Response Technology. What's interesting about Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) is that it can designate a single SSD to cache frequently accessed I/O data in a sort of hybrid RAID 0 arrangement.

PCMark Vantage: Testing Intel SRT

PCSTATS chose to run the whole PCMark Vantage benchmark a couple times to illustrate where the greatest benefit from enabling Intel SRT will be found. This took a loooong time! Pay attention to this benchmark chart and don't skim over the numbers, it's important to understand what type of applications will see any benefit from Intel SRT.

PCSTATS Benchmark ReportFuturemark PCMark Vantage 1.0.0.0
Overall: Points Ranking
SSD 15795
HDD 9850
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 1 10589
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 2 14635
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 3 14155

First up, PCMark Vantage's Overall results - the SSD system is the clear winner with 15,795 and the HDD system is the looser at 9850. With HDD + Cache SSD enabled in Enhanced mode, the first time through Intel SRT doesn't make a significant impact. The second time is a whole different ball of wax! Once I/O data is cached to the Intel 311 SSD, Intel SRT speeds up the benchmark score to within 93% of the system installed on an SSD.

Memory: Points Ranking

HDD 5445
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 1 5972
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 2 5734
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 3 5949

For the TV and Movies test in Vantage we see Intel SRT having less of an impact on the first, second and third runs than with the Memory test suite. The overall improvement is to about 90% of the SSD system.

HDD 7811
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 1 14664

HDD 9143
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 1 15200
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 2 14670
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 3 14510

For Gaming, Intel SRT boosts the HDD system to 95% of the SSD system result. For Music it boosts the HDD system to 93% of the SSD system's result. By way of comparison, the HDD system without Intel SRT stands at 50% and 56% of the SSD systems' results, respectively. In both suites there almost no change between run 1 / run 2 / run 3.

HDD 11887
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 1 14662
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 2 14200
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 3 14474

Communication is less demanding on data storage so the separation between SSD and HDD systems is only 21%. Again, little change between the three test runs though a clear benefit from simply enabling SSD cache.

HDD 7242
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 1 12968
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 2 15064
HDD + Cache SSD (Enhanced) RUN 3 15230

Productivity results double from 7242 to 15230 with the addition of an SSD cache over that the pure HDD test system. It takes Intel SRT a couple runs to achieve the highest improvement though.

Last but not least is the Vantage HDD test suite where Intel SRT improves the HDD system benchmark result by 4.5x! In the next section PCSTATS will expand the Vantage HDD suite so you can see how Intel Smart Response Technology influences the speed of the sub tests from 20MB/s to 120MB/s, for example.
