Go deeper my son, Use the force:

Curious as to how all this magical authentication stuff works? Taking a look behind the sensor's screen we saw some pretty high tech gear - for a mouse anyway's.

The clear sensor reflects an image of your fingerprint onto a small plastic mirror which is directed at a optical reader. The finger print is never stored as an image, but is transmitted as a 500 byte template file. The template gets pushed through an algorithm which identifies the correct fingerprint and denies any imposters. Biolink claims to have false acceptance rate of 1 in a billion, and a false rejection rate of 2.1%.

Unlike a normal mouse the Umatch is packed to the gills with circuitry and optics. The large sensor window is illuminated by to red LED's during authentication. The red LED's allow the optical sensor to read the finger print properly.
From this vantage point the three components of the authentication system are evident. The fingerprint is generated on the large optical window, reflected off a small plastic mirror and captured by the integrated optical sensor.
The aperture of the optical sensor is rather small but the image is captures is sufficient to enable the authentication algorithms to do their work.
