How We Tested

In order to test the effectiveness of each of the software, we compiled a list of ten really explicit pornographic sites and a list of ten regular sites. Then, we simply attempted to visit each site with the each of the software running in the background at the highest filtering settings. You may be wondering why we bothered visiting "appropriate" sites not just pornographic sites. The reason for that is that we noticed that when we set some of the software at the highest possible filtering settings we were not able to visit even appropriate sites.

That's definitely not a good thing, since we only want to block inappropriate material not the rest of the Internet. In order to give each software a fair chance, we downloaded the most current block lists where it was applicable. Our test machine was connected to the Internet via a 56K dial-up account.

Here's a list of the appropriate sites we visited:

http://www.cartoonnetwork.com
http://www.deeztech.com
http://www.disney.com
http://www.hotmail.com
http://www.yahoo.com
http://www.anandtech.com
http://www.nickjr.com
http://www.slashdot.org
http://www.msn.com
http://www.microsoft.com

You didn't really think we were going to give a list of the porn sites did you?

Let's take a look at the specific software one by one:
