Quantum Fireball Plus LM 20.5 GB HDD - PCSTATS
Abstract: Since my first Fireball had served me so well, and I wanted a lot of space, the next drive I bought was a 6.4-gigabyte Fireball ST.

ZD's WinBench99 v1.1

Starting down the home stretch was ZD's WinBench99 v1.1.

  Windows ME FAT 32 Windows 2000 Pro FAT 32 Windows 2000 Pro NTFS
Disk TX Rate (Beginning) 26,800 KB/Sec 26,800 KB/Sec 26,800 KB/Sec

CPU Utilization(%) 37.40% 30.23% 26.86%

Visual C++ 5.0 14,967 KB/s 18,900 KB/s 13,533 KB/s
CPU Utilization 29.25% 16.58% 16.63%

The variety of numbers in the High-End section between file systems and operating systems is bewildering. Under AVS/Express, FrontPage, and MicroStation SE, Windows 2000 handily outperforms WinMe, but comes up short under Sound Forge. Here NTFS is clearly slower than FAT32, but of course if you want the extra reliability and security it provides, you'll want to stick with it anyway. Again CPU utilization was higher under WinMe, except in the transfer rate tests.
