Benchmarking Amazons New EC2 C3 Instance Types
     Sat, Nov 23 2013 | 3:07P | Audio / Sound | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
AMD unveiled the Radeon R9 290 graphics card at the beginning of November as one step down from the new flagship Radeon R9 290X graphics card. Numerous Windows reviews praised the graphics card for its great performance but what wasn`t clear at the time was how the Linux performance and compatibility was for this new $399 USD graphics card. AMD hadn`t offered any review samples to Phoronix for conducting any Linux-based testing and benchmarking but it`s more clear now why that didn`t happen: the Linux performance isn`t stellar. I bought an XFX Radeon R9 290 and now there`s many Linux benchmarks coming out of this graphics card that`s riddled by what might be driver issues. I already regret having purchased the AMD Radeon R9 290 for use on Linux; the graphics card is hot power hungry noisy and the OpenGL results aren`t too good."

TDK TREK A26 Ultra-Portable Wireless Speaker
     Sat, Nov 23 2013 | 12:45P | Audio / Sound | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
We are literally just a few weeks away from Christmas and since all of us here happen to consider that season as the best and most cheerful time of the year weve decided to spend a weekend on the mountain away from technology and more specifically computers and TV. Personally i like the idea since i do need some time off to relax but Im not about to leave here entirely unprepared and so because of that for the past 2 weeks we`ve been doing our best to get our hands on as many portable devices as possible that can help us enjoy our time there while at the same time making us feel safer. TDK has been in the business of designing and manufacturing high performance wireless speaker systems for quite some time now but until just recently they didn`t offer something really tiny in their product line. It seems however that TDK listens to their consumer base and so the latest TREK A26 Ultra-Portable Wireless Speaker is here to change that."

Batman: Arkham Origins Review
     Fri, Nov 22 2013 | 3:07P | Audio / Sound | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
The old adage applies here if it`s not broke don`t fix it. I very much prefer this situation here with Origins than when Bioware and EA changed up the near-perfect formula of Dragon Age: Origins in the sequel. While Dragon Age 2 is not necessarily a bad game the first game was clearly superior. With Batman: Arkham Origins we have a case where I can honestly declare this the best Batman Arkham game yet. It has everything Arkham City had with consistently better boss battles and a story that arguably rivals Arkham Asylum. But if you weren`t hoping for more of the same you may not see it that way. If you were hoping for the leap forward to be as grand as the one from Asylum to City I don`t blame you for being disappointed I simply hold a different opinion."

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 GHz Edition
     Fri, Nov 22 2013 | 9:02A | Audio / Sound | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
While this isn’t a significant difference, where the Gigabyte GTX 780 GHz Edition does have a real advantage is in its dual-slot design. Both the GTX 780 Phantom GLH and GTX 780 Super JetStream feature triple slot coolers and while they work very well, Gigabyte was able to deliver similar results with their more compact WindForce X3 450 watt cooler.

Acoustic Research ARS60 Speakers
     Thu, Nov 21 2013 | 4:22P | Audio / Sound | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
“Today we have the opportunity to review the ARS60 Bluetooth enabled speaker from Acoustic Research. This is their next generation speaker and it comes packed with features. It also sports a compact design without losing its design quality. It is available in black, red, blue, white, lime green, pink or yellow. The design is shaped like an hour-glass but features two speakers with a bass reflex system. This system also features a NiMH rechargeable battery, offering ten hours of music play time (at medium volume). Could this 16 watt system sound as good as what we’ve seen with other Bluetooth speakers?”

ASUS GeForce GTX 760 MARS review
     Thu, Nov 21 2013 | 3:07P | Audio / Sound | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Ah yeah .. join us as we review and benchmark the ASUS GeForce GTX 760 MARS. Now you`d think this is a beefed up GTX 760 but the secret sauce really is that it has two 760 GPUs. Yup the ASUS GeForce GTX 760 MARS has been locked and loaded with two GPUs on a single PCB. That also means a customized PCB and an all new cooler. We have lots to talk about and to show of course as we`ll check the card out with our regular benchmarks Ultra HD testing FLIR thermal imaging and a handful of FCAT frametime results as well. Bring it on - Game on !"

eSPORTS CRONOS is a gaming headset
     Wed, Nov 20 2013 | 4:03P | Audio / Sound | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
The Tt eSPORTS CRONOS is a gaming headset that looks to deliver a more balanced soundstage that's well adjusted for gaming audio and hopefully more besides! Less balanced is its actual physical appearance, which bosts red LED lighting on the earcups for all to see. See if the CRONOS' performance can match its flashiness in our review.
