     Thu, Jan 13 2011 | 7:23P | Notebooks | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Because Acer and Asustek Computer have both shown their unwillingness to launch Oak Trail-based tablet PCs, Intel has recently been aggressively trying to persuade these vendors with price discounts and is hoping Asustek and Hewlett-Packard (HP), which are still undecided, will change their minds and fully support the platform, according to sources from notebook players.

ASUS Tegra 3 Powered Eee Pad Transformer Prime Detailed
     Wed, Jan 12 2011 | 11:19A | Notebooks | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
This morning I sat in on a conference with ASUS about their upcoming Tegra 3-based Transformer Prime tablet. The event covered everything you and I need to know about the tablet, as well as a few surprises. First off, the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime will be the first NVIDIA Tegra 3-based, quad-core tablet on the market. ASUS pushed that there are six unique selling points of Transformer Prime. The six points are: Incredibly Beautiful, Ultra Performance, Amazing Camera, Super IPS+ panel, Supreme Sound and Mobile Dock. Let`s dive into specs. Transformer Prime packs quite the performance and feature punch, sporting the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core System-on-a-Chip (SoC), a 10.1-inch LED backlit with Super IPS+, 1280 x 800 resolution panel with 10 finger multi-touch, 32 and 64GB sizes, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 1GB of Low-Profile DDR2 RAM, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with flash and 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera."

CODi CT3 Checkpoint Tested Tri Pak @ LanOC Reviews
     Sat, Jan 08 2011 | 4:00P | Notebooks | PermaLink

Yet another lesson I learned thanks to my laptop in CES was the task of flying with it. I had heard enough stories that carrying-on my notebook was a necessity, and after seeing our luggage return, I'm glad I did. I stored my laptop amidst the rest of my carry-on items, an assortment of notepads, gum, and a few magazines. With January in Ohio usually consisting of blizzards, I was also wearing a coat and boots. Needless to say, securing myself through the airport checkpoint took a little longer than it should have. In my ultimate quest to better prepare myself for CES this year, I jumped at the opportunity to test out CODi's checkpoint-friendly laptop backpack.

Lenovo CES 2011 Launch Coverage
     Wed, Jan 05 2011 | 12:55P | Notebooks | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
"Lenovo are hitting CES hard and fast this year and up to about a month before CES the company has been briefing us on some of the exciting new products that will be making an appearance. There are three main areas; the new ThinkPad Edge Laptops, IdeaPad Notebooks and IdeaCenter All in One unit. Lenovo really do have some sweet devices coming out over the coming months and hopefully we'll get a chance to take a look at some of them in more detail. The stand outs for me personally would have to be the B520 IdeaCentre with support for 3D Vision and in the laptop department the V series with some added color and the Y570d with 3D Vision support which includes 3D Glasses."

Quick Review: Dell Vostro V130 13.3-inch Notebook
     Mon, Jan 03 2011 | 12:02P | Notebooks | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
"Aimed at the business user, the Vostro series from Dell is today getting a little bit of a face lift and the new V130 is the one we’re checking out. Packing some sweet goodies, the V130 looks like it’s going to indeed hit the spot for the user on the go. Checking out the specifications of the V130 we’ve got on hand, it’s very business-like. We’ve got an Intel i5 470UM which is a Dual Core 1.33GHz CPU that has a total of four threads thanks to HyperThreading. We’ve got a single 4GB DDR3 memory module clocked at 800MHz DDR and graphics is provided by Intel in the form of Arrandale which carries only very basic features with a 166MHz core clock. Storage comes in the form of a single 500GB HDD. The screen is a 13.3” Anti-Glare LED lit LCD Panel which carries a native resolution of 1366 x 768, which is slightly above “HD” (or 1280 x 720, otherwise known as 720p). Other little extras include a built in camera that sits just above the screen, wireless 802.11b/g/n, Gigabit Networking and Bluetooth. Power is made possible with a 6-Cell Lithium Ion sealed battery. Everything is tied together with a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and very little bloat ware."

AMD global market share expected to rise to 15%
     Sat, Jan 01 2011 | 11:30A | Notebooks | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Mainly because AMD's Fusion series APUs to be launched in early 2011 have strong graphics capabilities and high performance/cost ratios, AMD is expected to see its global market share for notebook platforms alone rise from 11% in 2010 to 15% in 2011 and that for notebook, desktop and server platforms together from 20% to 25% and may advance further to 30% in 2012, according to Taiwan-based notebook and motherboard makers.

MSI GT660R-004US 16-inch Gaming Notebook
     Sat, Oct 23 2010 | 9:04A | Notebooks | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
"MSI has been big on netbooks and notebooks for a while now. Over the last several months the company has been launching new machines that are aimed at gamers and multimedia enthusiasts that have some really nice and cool features. Today I have one of the latest machines from MSI on my bench for some hands on time called the MSI GT660R-004US. When it comes to gaming notebooks, there are the all out, fully loaded gaming rigs that have the best of everything crammed inside and have a gigantic price to match the performance. The MSI GT660R-004US I am playing with today isn’t one of those fully loaded and crazy expensive machines. The MSI GT660R-004US is a reasonably priced gaming machine with reasonably powerful hardware that will play any game out there with the settings tweaked a bit. If you are in the market for a new gaming notebook and don’t have the budget for the newest and most powerful hardware, the MSI GT660R-004US might be the compromise for you."

When shopping for an ultraportable, one usually has to choose between price, performance, and battery life. Not so with Asus' new UL30A, which packs Intel CULV hardware into a thin-and-light chassis with an eight-cell battery. Let's see if it's any good.
