Intel decides to keep tablet subsidies, say sources

Intel has reportedly decided to continue subsidizing its mobile device processor platform after a series of evaluations recently and will even expand the product coverage from 10-inch and below devices to 12-inch and below ones, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Wage rates in eastern China rise in November

The local government in Jiangsu Province, eastern China, increased wage rates on November 1, much later than other cities, to avoid imposing a heavy burden on electronics factories during the third quarter of 2014 when there was a serious shortage of labor. The minimum monthly wage increased CNY150 (US$24.50) to CNY1,680 and minimum hourly rate by CNY1.50 to CNY14.50, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

"Although JEDEC standards call for a 64 msec refresh cycle, memory chips these days can actually hold data for longer than that. So, using a longer refresh cycle is quite possible. With a longer refresh cycle, the memory chips are refreshed less often, reducing both the amount of bandwidth wasted on refreshes and the amount of power consumed (which is great for laptops and other portable devices).

With demand from China's tier-1 to -3 cities already reaching saturation and motherboard players still needing more time and investment to further penetrate into tier-4 through tier-6 cities, branded motherboard sales in China in the first half of 2014 dropped slightly compared to the same period a year ago and their sales in 2014 may drop 7-10% as demand for motherboards is expected to stay weak in the second half, according to sources from motherboard players.
