Intel pushes into mini desktop market in 2015

Despite weak global PC sales, inexpensive mini desktops are still seeing strong demand from consumers, prompting Intel to strengthen its mini desktop platform R&D and related marketing, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. In addition, Intel is also aggressively promoting its Compute Stick and is aiming to ship 1.2 million units in 2015.

PC long-term outlook improves slightly, says IDC

Worldwide PC shipments are expected to fall by 4.9% in 2015, a drop from the previous forecast of 3.3%, while growth projections for 2016 and 2017 were raised slightly, according to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Fourth-quarter-2014 results were 1.7% ahead of forecast, but economic and product changes will create a head wind in the short term. Total 2015 volume is projected at 293.1 million PCs, slipping a little further to 291.4 million in 2019. In value terms, the PC market reached US$201 billion in 2014, a decline of 0.8%, and is expected to fall another 6.9% in 2015 with smaller declines in subsequent years bringing the total to US$175 billion by 2019.

Motherboard players unlikely to achieve shipment targets for 2015

Since demand for motherboards from Europe and China is still weak, motherboard players such as Micro-Star International (MSI), Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) and Biostar are expected to see shipments decline in 2015. The top-2 vendors Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology may not be able to achieve their 20 million-unit target of the year as their shipments for the first half are both expected to only reach around nine million units, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Asustek sees decreased 4Q14 profit

Asustek Computer saw net profit of NT$4.509 billion (US$143 million) for the fourth quarter of 2014 decrease by 22.41% on quarter and by 20.77% on year mainly due to loss of NT$713 million from foreign exchange, the company said at an investors conference on February 13.

ASRock shipped 6.2 million motherboards in 2014, far below its expectation at the beginning of the year and down from 7.6 million units in 2013 as the vendor decided to not join the price war started by Asustek Computer and Gigabyte Technology, according to sources from channel retailers.
