Asustek expected to miss 2011 motherboard target

Taiwan-based vendor Asustek Computer, based on receiving of orders in July, is expected to ship 11.6 million motherboards in the second half of 2011, resulting in a 2011 total shipment volume of 23 million units which is short of its internal goal of 25 million units, according to industry sources.

Worldwide PC shipments surpassed 85.2 million units in the second quarter of 2011, a 2.3% increase from the same period last year, according to preliminary results by Gartner. These results are below Gartner's earlier projection for 6.7 % growth.

Foxconn reportedly considering ECS acquisition

Taiwan-based electronics manufacturing service provider Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) reportedly is considering to acquire motherboard maker Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) and is said that the consideration is mainly aiming at ECS' China-based retail channel subsidiary Orbbit. However, both Foxconn and ECS refuted the rumor.

Seagate and Samsung have announced a "broad strategic alignment," as part of which Seagate will take over Samsung's hard-drive operations in exchange for a cool $1.375 billion (paid half in cash, half in stock). The deal also involves a NAND flash memory supply agreement as well as "expanded cooperation" on enterprise storage.

Japan-based Nippon Chem-Con, a main supplier of solid aluminum electrolytic capacitors for Taiwan-based motherboard makers, has temporarily stopped production due to the earthquake hitting northeastern Japan, but the makers will not be negatively influenced because they have 1- to 2-month inventories, plus one or more alternative supply sources in Japan, according to sources from motherboard players.

Worldwide PC microprocessor shipments flat on year in 4Q10

Worldwide PC microprocessor shipment growth in the fourth calendar quarter of 2010 slowed notably, compared to both the third quarter of 2010, a drop of 0.04% on quarter, and to the fourth quarter of 2009, a drop of 0.21% on year, according to the latest PC microprocessor study from IDC. For the full year 2010, however, worldwide PC microprocessor shipments grew 17.1%, while revenues increased 26.7% to US$36.3 billion.

Intel to unveil 22nm Ivy Bridge CPUs at Computex 2011

Intel reportedly has completed the design of its 22nm Ivy Bridge processors and will showcase the new CPUs at Computex Taipei 2011 in June, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

Meanwhile, AMD has also accelerated the production of its Llano APUs and is expected to begin shipping the APUs to ODM/OEM makers in May at the earliest instead of the original schedule set in the third quarter, the paper noted.

Taiwan IC design houses land windfall orders on Intel support chip design issue,

Taiwan-based motherboard and ODM/OEM PC makers are placing more short lead-time orders for related PC support chips with local IC design houses after Intel disclosed a design issue of its recently released support chip, the Intel 6 series, codenamed Cougar Point, which in some cases will potentially impact the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Time report.

"Before the previous generation of Intel processor was released, Lynnfield, remember that NVIDIA initially WANTED to have chipset options on the market as well. Instead, Intel put legal pressure on NVIDIA to the point that the entire division was dropped. The death of the nForce line was with a whimper, not a bang, but the fact that today you can't make a Sandy Bridge processor purchase because of failures with Intel's own chipset, the ONLY chipset that exists for SNB-base CPUs, should help NVIDIA's top brass sleep better at night."
