CREATIVE ANNOUNCES SOUND BLASTER X-FI SUPPORT IN QUAKE 4

Creative, the creator of Sound Blaster®, the worldwide standard for PC audio, today announced that it has teamed with id Software to provide outstanding Xtreme Fidelity audio performance with Sound Blaster X-Fi™ sound card support in id Software’s recently released QUAKE 4™ PC game. QUAKE 4 is the latest of this year’s top PC games to support Sound Blaster X-Fi, and joins the ranks of DOOM 3® from id Software, and Battlefield 2 from Electronic Arts to support this industry-leading audio platform.

“QUAKE 4 offers the most intense and visceral game experiences available on the PC, and our powerful audio effects, delivered through Sound Blaster X-Fi hardware, enhance every moment of the gameplay,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software. “Audio is a key component in drawing gamers into the war between the Earth and Strogg, and players armed with the latest Sound Blaster X-Fi enabled hardware will hear the battle rage as if they are actually there.”

“Sound Blaster X-Fi not only introduces the brand new, highly powerful Xtreme Fidelity audio platform, but also X-RAM—the first significant amount of on-board memory solely dedicated to audio processing,” said George Thorn, director of developer relations for Creative. “X-RAM takes on all the work of decompressing game audio and readying it for playback, freeing up the PC's CPU for other tasks, resulting in games that play at lightning speed. We’re pleased to partner with id to implement this technology in QUAKE 4, and look forward to working with other top game developers to optimize game audio for Sound Blaster X-Fi in the future.”

Creative worked with id Software and Raven Software during the development of QUAKE 4 to ensure that the game takes full advantage of X-RAM, along with the newest version of Creative’s EAX® (Environmental Audio Effects) technology, EAX ADVANCED HD™ 5.0. EAX 5.0 adds unprecedented levels of audio realism in-game by supporting up to 128 simultaneous voices, along with creating more faithful audio positioning and distance.

New features of EAX 5.0 include:

· PurePath – Developers are now able to send individual sounds through specific speaker channels, such as voice narration to the center channel or explosions to the subwoofer. This delivers an experience far more akin to a feature film DVD.
· FlexiFX – Developers can now utilize up to four fully flexible audio effects, such as reverb, on every individual sound.
· MacroFX – Developers are now able to faithfully recreate close-up sounds, such as a whisper or a laser blast zipping past the player’s ear, as easily as they can simulate far away sounds such as explosions.
· Environment Occlusion – Previous versions of EAX supported occlusion, which recreated the effect of sound passing through a solid object. Environment Occlusion improves the realism of the effect, by allowing reverb to be muffled due to occluding objects, providing the best simulation of real-world audio possible.

The Sound Blaster X-Fi family of sound cards is now available at www.us.creative.com and at major retail outlets. QUAKE 4 is now available wherever PC video games are sold.
