AMD PATENT IS 10 MILLIONTH DERWENT PATENT RECORDED
-AMD's Intellectual Property Productivity Ranks Among the Top Corporations
in the World-
SUNNYVALE, CA-OCTOBER 24, 2000-AMD and Derwent Information today announced
that AMD's recent patent for an integrated circuit transistor has become the
10 millionth patent record to be added to Derwent Information's flagship
database - the Derwent World Patents Index (Derwent WPI).
"AMD is one of the world's leaders in process technology," said Mark
Houghton, Director for Integrated Products at Derwent. "Last year, they
ranked 17th in the world in terms of U.S. patents awarded."
"AMD generates a substantial amount of leading edge technology, as
indicated by our ranking," said Harry Wolin, VP of Intellectual Property at
AMD. "When you consider how much larger those companies are who rank above
us on the list, I think it's pretty clear that, pound for pound, AMD is one
of world's true leaders in terms of innovation."
According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, patent
applications have increased by more than 50% since 1992. Keeping abreast of
patents awarded in the United States and across the globe is more crucial
than ever. "The 10 millionth record marks a significant milestone," said
AMD's Harry Wolin.
Mark Houghton, Director for Integrated Products at Derwent, agreed. "That is
now 10 million inventions, whose patent applications have been translated,
abstracted, indexed and made searchable within Derwent WPI, providing
thousands of companies from around the world with an excellent source of
technical, scientific and business information."
"The ability to secure patents is integral to AMD's success," said
Bill Siegle, Chief Scientist at AMD. "We encourage our employee-inventors to
apply for them. Clearly, there is a direct relationship between winning
patents on the one hand and creating products, such as the AMD Athlon(tm)
processor, which has won more than 50 awards world-wide, since it was
introduced over a year ago."
AMD is a global supplier of integrated circuits for the personal and
networked computer and communications markets. AMD produces
microprocessors, flash memories, and integrated circuits for communications
and networking applications. Founded in 1969 and based in Sunnyvale,
California, AMD had revenues of $2.9 billion in 1999 (NYSE: AMD)
