Belkin USB VideoBus II review

The ability to capture, edit and store video based content on a PC has become more of a commonplace, especially the last few years with the expansion of the Internet.

Many PC multimedia manufacturers have introduced video capture solutions with specifications targeted to different user needs from the low end, low cost solutions up to costly high end solutions. Every video grabbing solution allows the recording of video from any camera through S Video and/or composite sources.

The Belkin USB VideoBus II is a very small and light external video capture device with minimal power consumption suitable for desktop systems and laptops. In fact, this device is very useful to anyone that owns a video camera as it can be connected to a USB port very easily. Video camera users can transfer video content to any PC via a USB port in just a few minutes. The Belkin USB Video Bus II package contained the following material:

¡¤ Belkin USB VideoBus II
¡¤ A manual containing detailed installation instructions
¡¤ Installation software containing drivers, MGI VideoWave IIISE, MGI Photosuite IIISE, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook Express, Windows Media Player, Windows NetMeeting and TeVeo LIVe.

Upon unpacking, we were impressed by the small size and light weight of the VideoBus II. The manual sports step by step information about product installation in each operating system. People who are totally unfamiliar with PC's can easily install this product without any problems. We tested the installation process both under Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE and it went smoothly.

The Drivers:
Here are a few screenshots of the drivers:

Here we can adjust the video signal standard and the consumed USB bandwidth. The drivers support zoom, pan, tilt, brightness, contrast, hue and saturation.
The following driver tab controls the capture format. We were able to select resolutions from 160x120 up to 352x288. The following driver tab allows us to adjust the preview window options.
Here we can configure the Video input source (RCA composite or S VIDEO).
We noticed that on the last driver tab, none of the displayed audio options can be configured.
