Simultaneously with the release of the Pentium 4 Northwood at 2.2GHz AMD has put out their Athlon XP 2000+ running at 1.67GHz.  This release is designed to take advantage of the new ratings system to keep AMD marketing wise in the run for the top performing CPU.  AMD's real worry here is how much better the Northwood P4 performs with the 512KB of cache.  Initial reports show a 5-10% increase, so perhaps they don't have too much to worry about with their own .13 micron CPU, the Thoroughbred Athlon core, on the way this quarter.

Below is a chart detailing the features of the Athlon XP as compared to the Thunderbird version of the Athlon.  The Athlon XP shares the same Palomino core that the Athlon MP and Athlon 4 use.

  Athlon (Thunderbird) Athlon XP (Palomino)
CPU Interface Socket A Socket A
Fabrication Process .18µ .18µ
Number of Transistors 37 million 37.5 million
Die Size 120mm² 128mm²
Relative Power Consumption -- 20% reduction
3DNow! Version Enhanced 3DNow!™ 3DNow! Professional™
Onboard Cache  384k 384k with data prefetch

As discussed in our Athlon XP 1800+ review AMD has introduced a new organic package.  As you can see in the picture below this has altered the look of the CPU and has made it much lighter.

In addition to the physical changes AMD has also added the speed ratings system and something they call QuantiSpeed architecture.  Basically they now rate the CPUs performance based on how fast the older Athlon Thunderbird CPUs would have to be to equate to the new CPUs performance.  This means that the Athlon Thunderbird would have to run roughly at 1.9GHz to equal the performance of the Athlon Palomino at 1.6GHz.  This primarily benefits them in making the speed gap with the P4 look less daunting.

Below are the new Athlon XP speed grades with their pricing in quantities of 1,000.  The Athlon XP 1500+ has dropped from their pricing data, so this may signal an end to production of the speed of CPU.  Also take note that AMD has not lowed the price of the Athlon XP 1900+.

2000+ 1.67GHz $339
1900+ 1.6GHz $269
1800+ 1.53GHz $223
1700+ 1.47GHz $190
1600+ 1.4GHz $160

Here we have a large picture of the new Athlon XP 2000+.  As you can see the organic packaging has changed the layout of the CPU.  You will also notice that the L1 bridges are cut.  It still appears that Athlon XP L1 bridges are all cut while Athlon MP bridges are not cut.  Several Athlon XP overclocking kits have appeared that aid in filling in and connecting this L1 bridges.

Here's a close up of the core.  The AX stands for Athlon XP.  2000 is the speed rating and AGOGA is the process revision.  0147 designates a week 47 of 2001 CPU.   AMD has supplied us with the following details about the 2000+ model.

Information Specific to the Athlon XP 2000+ model:

Max Thermal Power: 70.0W

Typical Thermal Power: 62.5W

Icc (processor current) Max: 40.0A

Icc Typical: 35.7A

Any Athlon XP in Stop Grant S1 or ACPI Sleep State (Low Power State):

Nominal Voltage: 1.30V

Max Icc: 1.54A

Typical Icc: .66A

Packaging and color:

Over time, the OPGA (organic pin grid array) packaging is migrating over from brown to the color green. This has no effect on performance. You'll see all organic packaging in green by around the end of the first half of 02.
