Nokia 2003 Mobile Phone Lineup: Sexy little MMS

A few weeks ago we received word from Nokia about their newest mobiles for 2003, all of which have full colour LCD screens, MMS capabilities, and loads of sex appeal. Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a global standard messaging format for sending and receiving text, pictures, and sound. Think of it as Short Message Service (SMS) on steroids, but don't make the mistake and parallel MMS to email, attachments and all that hoopla. A MMS message is a single entry (containing sound, imagry, and text) which can be sent from phone to phone, or email address.

I'm still steadfastly ignoring any WAP features on the mobile phone I use, but the prospects of what MMS and a digital camera enabled phone can accomplish are quite alluring. SMS is widely popular, and while the costs to send MMS messages will vary, it would be safe to say the technology will steadily drop in price over the next few quarters. Already on the road to 3G, Nokia is embracing MMS for their 2003 mobiles as we've outlined it here, with eventual plans to support MMS video clips, and the eventual shift to GPRS. Industry support includes the likes of Ericsson, Sony, Motorola, and Siemens.

Integrated VGA Camera - Nokia 3650

Flip over the Nokia 3650 and you'll find a tiny little VGA resolution digital camera nestled in the back. With the 176x208 resolution colour LCD screen acting as a viewfinder, you can take short videoclips at upto 15fps, or still images. Then, MMS those pictures to a friend. The Nokia 3650 features a radically redesigned circular keypad and Tri-band agility. Powered by the Symbian OS, this mobile comes with an Multimedia Memory Card slot and lasts up to 4h digital talk time. Downloadable ringtones, voice and text memos, and Bluetooth connectivity round out the spec list.

Flip Access to a Full Keyboard - Nokia 6800

The Nokia 6800 hides a full-size QWERTY keyboard under the dial pad, opening up like a clamshell to reveal its little secret. A 128x128 pixel colour LCD display accompanies an integrated digital FM radio tuner and joystick for easy navigation. If that doesn't catch your attention then just consider the Nokia 6800's other fine points; GPRS mobile internet connectivity, MMS enabled with predictive text input, built-in JAVA based email client and 4.5h digital talk time.

Sporty [Spice] Mobile - Nokia 5100

This is the kind of phone we need around here, the Nokia 5100 packs in a 128x128 colour LCD screen, stereo FM Radio, 300 contact phonebook and even a flashlight under the protective rubber exoskeleton. If you're out jogging and get tired of talking with the mates, you can always key in the thermometer to see just what the temperature is. For the calorie counters out there, the Nokia 5100 also allows you to keep track of your caloric burn rate during certain activities. MMS will let you send a picture of your self working out (via external HS-1C Camera Headset) to prove you really aren't just watching the telly. This rubber-cased mobile is good for 5h or digital talk time and is Tri-band enabled.

FM Radio and Digital Camera - Nokia 7250

The keypad looks a little weird on this phone, but the striking purple shell, and digital camera around back are more than enough to distract you from that. This MMS enabled phone is can take VGA quality images, and display them on the 128x128 pixel colour LCD screen. With a phone book that can store 500 contacts, an alarm clock, and stereo FM radio the Nokia 7250 is a powerhouse of a mobile. Digital talk time sits at 5h, and the phone will work on any GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900MHz Tri-band Network worldwide.
