Sandra is designed to
test the theoretical power of a complete system and individual components. The
numbers taken though are again, purely theoretical and may not represent real
world performance.
Here we see that the Samsung SP8004H out perform
the reference 30GB 7200 RPM Ultra/100 HDD by quite a fair margin.
HD Tach is a physical performance hard drive test for Windows
95/98/ME and Windows NT/2000. In Windows 9X/ME it uses a special kernel
mode VXD to get maximum accuracy by bypassing the file system. A similar
mechanism is used in Windows NT/2000. HD Tach reads from areas all over the hard
drive and reports an average speed. It also logs the read speeds to a text
file that you can load into a spreadsheet and graph to visually read the results
of the test.

The SP8004H performs quite well in HD Tach as well
with only the disk access time being a little high.
WinBench 99 is a
subsystem-level benchmark that measures the performance of a PC's graphics,
disk, and video subsystems in a Windows environment. WinBench 99's tests can run
on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows Me
systems.

Winbench
99 confirms what HD Tach says, disk access time is
quite high at 13.6 ms, but here CPU utilization is at 0% which is most
likely a software bug than a true measure.
Conclusion:
The Samsung SP8004H 80 GB 7200 RPM Ultra/100 hard drive delivers exact what you
would expect from it. Good performance for the money.
With a 80 GB capacity you're not going to be
running out of hard drive space any time soon, with a 7200 RPM rotation the
drive is pretty quick although it is a little slower in terms of disk access
times than other drives in its class, namely the Maxtor D740X series. Other then
that we have no complaints, the drive is large, quick and silent; all good
aspects to have in a hard drive!
