The "VAIO-U" as it is commonly called, is a ultra subnotebook that only Sony could build! The VAIO PCG-U1 measures just 184mm × 30mm x 139mm and because of this small size it can be operated by the thumbs alone.

Powered by an 876MHz TM5800 Crusoe processor, the VAIO U1 is equipped with a 6.4" LCD screen, 128MB of SDRAM, a 20GB harddrive, room for a Sony Memory stick, an RJ45 network adaptor, twin USB ports, and Firewire jack. All other media drives are external, connecting via USB, or port replicators.

The PCG-U1 weighs in at just 1.9lbs, and runs for about 2.5-4 hours on a standard battery (looks like the XXL version is was used on the display model).

These little notebooks are apparently really hot in Japan right now because they work so well for cramped commuters looking to get some work done. If you can imaging trying to work on a notebook during rush hour on the subway you can see how the small size of the PCG-U1 would come in handy. With built in wireless networking support, a Japanese commuter would be able to check their morning emails and respond before they even set foot in the office.

It is hard to say how practical the U1 would be for someone with North American sized hands, but you can't argue about how cool this little puppy is!

A few other Sony notebooks were on hand for the event, including the VAIO C1MV and GT1. The sony C1MV (right) packs a TM5800 processor, digital camera, 9" 1280x600 LCD screen, 20GB hard drive and extra long battery life - not to mention it also gets the blood pumping with its incredibly tiny size. With the right battery pack on the C1MV, you can run it for up to 15 hours continuously!
