Overclocking the Albatron 5900PV

First off, I'd like to say that overclocking the Albatron GeForceFX 5900PV was a very frustrating process but it was not Albatron's fault. With a default speed of 400 MHz core, 850 MHz memory the only thing that differentiates between a GeForceFX 5900PV and a FX 5900PV Ultra is the core speed (Ultra runs at 450 MHz) and of course the $100 US price tag. ;-)

Anyway, we begin raising the core speed first. Starting at 400 MHz we went up in 10 MHz increments, 440MHz, 450MHz, 460MHz came and went easily, as did the 470MHz and 480MHz mark. Amazingly the core would do 500 MHz!!! Anything higher and the CodeCreatures benchmark would lock up.

The memory was not to be out done by the core, using 2.2ns Hynix memory (the same memory that's on the FX 5900PV Ultra and runs at the same speed) that runs at 850 MHz we jumped up at higher intervals. 900MHz, 925MHz, 950MHz and no problems in sight. The memory did an amazing 1 GHz, but anything higher and coolbits would say there was an error.

Now comes the somewhat frustrating part. With both the core and memory both heavily overclocked the benchmark results would be lower then stock! Puzzled, I began to search around the net to see if others had the same problems and apparently the nVIDIA GeForceFX 5900PV/FX 5900PV Ultra's will automatically slow themselves down if they get too hot! While I understand why nVIDIA does this, it certainly makes it harder to determine the maximum speed of a videocard.

In the end the highest we were able to overclock both the core and memory and have acceptable results was 466 MHz core, 975 MHz memory.
